How do I cancel PostHog?

Usage-based Analytics Pay-as-you-go · billed via web, invoice
2 min Self-serve No fee To cancel
Short answer

Cancel PostHog paid usage from the organization billing settings at app.posthog.com/organization/billing: set a billing limit on each product, which is the documented self-serve cancellation. It takes about 2 minutes; usage beyond a limit is not ingested or billed, and ending the agreement entirely requires thirty days written notice. PostHog says unexpected bills are pretty much always refunded, while prepaid contract credits are non-refundable.

Step-by-step instructions

1
Check your order form

Pre-paid credit plans run on a contract (usually 12 months) captured in an order form, arranged through PostHog's sales team.

2
Know the credit rules before ending a contract

Prepaid credits are non-refundable and expire twelve months from purchase. On renewal at equal or higher spend, PostHog may roll over half of the remaining credits.

3
After the contract ends

You can move to any pay-as-you-go plan. Either party may terminate with thirty days' written notice; customers without prepaid credits get no refund on termination.

Refunds, downgrades, pausing and your data

Four questions people ask before they cancel
Can I get my money back?

PostHog's pricing page says unexpected bills are "pretty much always" refunded, and its side-project-insurance page promises to refund an unexpectedly large first-month bill caused by a traffic spike on hobby projects (via the in-app Help button) - while reserving the final call. Under the terms, prepaid contract credits are non-refundable, and customers without prepaid credits are not entitled to a refund on termination.

Case by case
Is there a cheaper way to stay?

Cancel paid usage by setting billing limits at any time; you only pay for what you used. Over-limit data is not ingested and is lost. On the free plan, events over the monthly allowance are dropped and feature flags return a default quota-limited response. Free keeps 1 project and 1-year retention, versus 6 projects and 7-year retention with a card on file.

Free tier exists
Can I pause instead of cancel?

No pause option is documented. The closest mechanism is a billing limit: once usage hits it, ingestion stops and you are never charged above the amount you set, while the free monthly allowance keeps resetting.

What happens to my account data?

Events are retained 7 years on paid plans and 1 year on free; recordings 90 days on pay-as-you-go and 1 month on free; logs 14 days. Data beyond its retention period may be permanently deleted. An organization owner can delete the whole organization and all its data from the Danger Zone in settings - irreversible, completing within minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Answers checked with the steps above
Will I get a final bill after I stop paid usage?

Yes, likely. PostHog bills monthly for usage already incurred, and its terms state termination does not waive fees already owed - expect one final usage invoice.

What happens when I hit a billing limit I set?

Additional events are permanently dropped and feature flags return a default quota-limited response. PostHog never charges more than the limit you set.

Do free tier limits reset every month?

Yes - another 1M analytics events, 5K session replays and so on each month. Unused free allowance does not roll over.

Can I keep using PostHog for free after cancelling paid usage?

Yes. PostHog stays free while you remain under the free tier limits, with 1 project and 1-year data retention.

What happens to my historical data after downgrading?

Data older than the retention period may be permanently deleted: events keep 1 year on free (7 years on paid) and recordings 1 month on free (90 days on pay-as-you-go).

How do I download old invoices?

In billing settings, click "Manage card details and view past invoices" to open Stripe, then download them under Invoice history.
