How do I cancel a subscription on my Android phone?
If a charge shows up as Google Play and you cannot tell what it is for, the subscription is billed through Google Play, and every one of them is cancelled from the same list, whichever app started it. Subscriptions Google bills you for directly are not in that list: those are cancelled in your Google payments profile, and the Google account hub is linked with the other hubs at the foot of this page.
The steps below are Google's own, taken from Google Play Help. Underneath them is a guide for every service in our catalogue that can be cancelled from that list, with the plan prices, the refund rules and what happens to your account after you stop paying.
The Google Play route, whatever the subscription is
One list holds every subscription billed through Google Play, so these steps work even when you do not know which app started the charge.
On your Android device, go to subscriptions in Google Play. Make sure to sign in to the Google Account that has your subscriptions.
Select the subscription you want to cancel. If you cannot find it, Google says it may be on a different account, so try switching between accounts and looking again.
Tap Cancel subscription, then follow the instructions.
On your computer, go to subscriptions in Google Play. For the subscription you want to cancel, click Manage, then click Cancel subscription. Within the confirmation pop-up, select a reason and click Continue.
When you uninstall the app, your subscription won't cancel. Subscriptions on Google Play are for an indefinite term and you are charged at the beginning of each billing cycle according to your subscription terms, unless you unsubscribe, so cancelling in that list is the only thing that stops the billing.
Every step above comes from Cancel, pause, or change a subscription on Google Play (Android) and Cancel, pause, or change a subscription on Google Play (Computer).

I do not recognise the charge. How do I find out what it is?
Open subscriptions in Google Play: every subscription billed through Google Play to that Google Account is listed there, and Google asks you to make sure you are signed in to the Google Account that has your subscriptions. If the subscription is not in the list, Google says it may be on a different account, so try switching between accounts and looking again.
Does uninstalling the app cancel the subscription?
No. Google is explicit about it: when you uninstall the app, your subscription won't cancel. Subscriptions on Google Play are for an indefinite term and you are charged at the beginning of each billing cycle unless you unsubscribe, so the charge keeps coming until you cancel in the subscriptions list itself.
Do I keep access after I cancel?
Yes on a paid subscription, no on a free trial. Google says that when you cancel a subscription you'll still be able to use your subscription for the time you've already paid. Its own example: buy a one-year subscription on January 1 for $10 and cancel on July 1, and you have access to the subscription until December 31 and are not charged another yearly $10 the following January 1. A trial is the exception: the Google Play Terms of Service say that once you cancel your trial you immediately lose access to the content and any subscription privileges unless otherwise specified.
How long before the renewal do I have to cancel?
The Google Play Terms of Service say subscriptions are automatically charged each billing period and that you may be charged no earlier than 24 hours before the beginning of each billing period, so cancel more than a day ahead to be safe. You may cancel a subscription at any time before the end of the applicable billing period, and the cancellation applies to the next period. On a free trial, the terms say you must cancel before the end of the trial period to avoid being charged, and that once you cancel your trial you immediately lose access to the content and any subscription privileges unless otherwise specified. Separately from the charge itself, Google says an authorisation hold may be placed on your form of payment up to 48 hours prior to the beginning of the next renewal period, or up to 5 days before it if you are based in India or Brazil.
Can I get a refund for a charge I did not expect?
Sometimes. Google says that within 48 hours of the purchase you may be able to get a refund depending on the details of the purchase, and that after 48 hours you have to contact the developer, who can process refunds according to their policies and applicable laws. To ask Google, go to play.google.com, click your profile picture, click Payments & subscriptions and then Budget & order history, click Report a problem for the order you want to return, select the option that describes your situation, complete the form and note that you'd like a refund, then click Submit. Google says you'll usually get a decision within one day but that it can take up to four days.
Can I pause the subscription instead of cancelling it?
Sometimes. Google says some apps let you pause your subscription, that the subscription then pauses at the end of your current billing period, and that the available pause durations range from one week to three months. On your Android device, go to subscriptions on Google Play, select the subscription you want to pause, tap Manage and then Pause payments, set the time period to pause payments and tap Confirm.
