Step-by-step instructions

The self-serve route covers monthly and annual subscriptions that are not on contract.

1
Open Settings, Subscription, then Billing

Sign in to the Intercom workspace and navigate to Settings > Subscription > Billing.

2
Open Payment details

Select Payment details at the top of the Billing area.

3
Click Cancel subscription

Scroll to the bottom and cancel. Intercom access continues until the end of the current billing period, then the workspace stops renewing.

Cancelling stops renewal but does not delete workspace data. It becomes inaccessible after the subscription ends.

Refunds, downgrades, pausing and your data

Four questions people ask before they cancel
Can I get my money back?

Annual subscriptions are paid upfront and do not receive a prorated refund when cancelled early. Intercom documents credits rather than direct refunds for eligible plan downgrades, and does not publish a general monthly-plan refund window.

No refunds
Is there a cheaper way to stay?

Monthly and annual self-serve customers can change plan from Settings > Subscription > Billing > Subscription. Annual downgrades take effect at renewal; an eligible downgrade credit is applied to a later invoice instead of paid as a direct refund.

Can I pause instead of cancel?

Self-serve subscriptions cannot be paused. Contract customers can ask their Account Manager whether a pause is available under their agreement.

Not available
What happens to my account data?

Cancellation preserves workspace data but makes it inaccessible after the subscription ends until the workspace resubscribes. Workspace deletion is separate, permanent and completes within 14 days; an active annual contract blocks self-serve deletion.

Frequently asked questions

Answers checked with the steps above
When does Intercom cancellation take effect?

At the end of the current monthly or annual billing period. The subscription does not renew after that date.

Does Intercom refund an annual plan after cancellation?

No. Annual subscriptions are paid upfront and do not receive a prorated refund when cancelled early.

Can I pause Intercom?

Not on a self-serve subscription. Contract customers can ask their Account Manager about a pause.

What happens to my data after cancellation?

Intercom preserves it, but the data is inaccessible after the subscription ends until you start a new subscription.

How do contract customers cancel Intercom?

Contact the Account Manager and give written notice at least 30 days before renewal. Missing that window renews the contract for another 12 months.

Does cancelling Intercom delete the workspace?

No. Workspace deletion is a separate permanent action in Settings > Workspace > General and completes within 14 days.
