How do I cancel Microsoft Azure?

Pay as you go Hosting & deployment Pay-as-you-go · billed via web
5 min Self-serve No fee To cancel
Short answer

Cancel an Azure subscription in the Azure portal from Cost Management + Billing: open Subscriptions, select the subscription, choose Cancel, then Cancel subscription. It takes about 5 minutes, billing stops immediately, and services are disabled. You pay outstanding usage on the final bill, and support-plan cancellation is not prorated.

What you are cancelling

Microsoft public cloud billed pay as you go for virtual machines, storage, databases, and other Azure services, with optional reservations and savings plans. This guide covers every place the subscription can live - the website and team plans - plus what happens to refunds, pausing and your data afterwards.

Step-by-step instructions

1
Use a subscription owner account

A subscription owner without a condition can cancel website sign-up, Enterprise Agreement, Enterprise Dev/Test, Azure plan, and Azure plan for DevTest subscriptions. An account administrator without the owner role cannot cancel.

2
Delete the subscription after the wait

The Delete subscription option is available 3 days after cancel for customer-led subscriptions, or 7 days for field and partner channel subscriptions. Type the subscription name if asked, then select Delete. Azure also deletes it automatically 90 days after cancel.

Not cancelling today? Put it in your calendar.

Tell us when Microsoft Azure renews and download a calendar reminder that lands two days before, with this guide and the direct cancellation page inside. Nothing is stored - the file is yours.

Works with Apple, Google and Outlook calendars. Your renewal date shows in Microsoft Azure's billing settings.

Refunds, downgrades, pausing and your data

Four questions people ask before they cancel
Can I get my money back?

After you cancel, billing stops immediately and you receive a final invoice for usage in the last billing cycle, which can arrive up to 72 hours after the cycle ends. You must pay outstanding fees. A one-month subscription may be terminated without a cancellation fee. Cancelling an Azure support plan does not result in a prorated refund. No general refund of unused pay-as-you-go usage is documented.

No refunds
Is there a cheaper way to stay?

After cancel, services are disabled: virtual machines are deallocated, temporary IP addresses are freed, and storage is read-only. You can reactivate a pay-as-you-go subscription in the Azure portal. Other subscription types require contacting support within 90 days. Deleting subscriptions does not automatically delete the Azure account.

Can I pause instead of cancel?

No subscription pause is documented. Instead of canceling, you can remove all resources to prevent unwanted charges.

What happens to my account data?

Azure does not immediately delete your data or the subscription. Microsoft waits 30 to 90 days before permanently deleting data in case you need to access or recover it, and does not charge for retaining that data. The subscription is automatically deleted 90 days after you cancel.
