How do I cancel Azure DevOps?

$6 / month Developer infrastructure Basic · billed via web
2 min Self-serve No fee To cancel
Short answer

Cancel Azure DevOps paid billing from Organization settings, then Billing: choose Change billing, select Remove billing, and Save. It takes about 2 minutes, and paid Basic, Artifacts, and Test Plans quantities revert to the free tier immediately. Charges already incurred in the current cycle still appear on the Azure bill, with daily pro-rating rather than a leftover-term refund.

Step-by-step instructions

This is Azure DevOps Services billing, not an Azure VM subscription.

1
Sign in as a Project Collection Administrator

Sign in to your organization at https://dev.azure.com/{Your_Organization}. Organization owners are automatically in the Project Collection Administrators group, which is required to change billing.

2
Open Organization settings, then Billing

Select Organization settings, then select Billing.

3
Choose Change billing, then Remove billing

Select Change billing, then select Remove billing, then Save. Paid quantities for Basic, Azure Artifacts and Azure Test Plans immediately revert to the free tier.

Removing billing does not delete the organization. Deleting the organization is a separate Overview > Delete action.

Refunds, downgrades, pausing and your data

Four questions people ask before they cancel
Can I get my money back?

Azure DevOps meters pro-rate at 1/31st of a unit per day, so a mid-month assignment or removal is charged only for the days used. Reductions and cancellations are effective immediately. Removing billing or deleting the organization does not refund amounts already incurred in the current cycle; those charges appear on the next Azure bill.

Refund possible
Is there a cheaper way to stay?

Removing the billing subscription immediately returns paid Basic, Azure Artifacts and Azure Test Plans quantities to the free tier (first five Basic users, 2 GiB Artifacts, no paid Test Plans). Reducing users or assigning Stakeholder access also stops those user charges.

Free tier exists
Can I pause instead of cancel?

No pause option is documented. Public billing docs describe removing billing, reducing users, or deleting the organization.

Not available
What happens to my account data?

Deleting an organization immediately removes user access. The organization is disabled and recoverable for 28 days from the Visual Studio profile; after 28 days the organization and data are permanently deleted. Microsoft notes that in rare cases deletion can take up to 70 days. Deleting the Azure DevOps organization does not cancel users' Azure portal accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Answers checked with the steps above
Does removing billing delete my Azure DevOps organization?

No. Removing billing only reverts paid quantities to the free tier. Deleting the organization is a separate Overview > Delete action and requires billing to be unlinked first.

When do charges stop?

Reductions and cancellations are effective immediately. You still pay for paid users and services already used in the current billing cycle. Daily charges are 1/31st of the monthly unit.

Can I recover a deleted organization?

Yes, for 28 days. Sign in to your Visual Studio profile, open Organizations Pending Deletion, and select Restore. After 28 days the data is permanently deleted.

Do I cancel this in the Azure portal?

Paid Azure DevOps quantities are removed from Organization settings > Billing inside Azure DevOps. Charges then appear on the linked Azure subscription bill. Cancelling an Azure cloud subscription is a different product.

Is there a cancellation fee?

No cancellation fee is documented. You pay usage already incurred in the current cycle.
