Step-by-step instructions

Standard Payments has no monthly platform fee. Closing the account is separate from cancelling a Billing or Radar Subscription Plan.

1
Sign in as the owner on the correct account

Open the Dashboard. Use the business-name dropdown at the top right to confirm the purple-selected account is the one you want to close. Each Stripe account must be closed individually.

2
Pay out balances and export records

Stripe cannot close an account with a negative balance. Pay out any existing positive balance first. Export financial reports to CSV before closing.

3
Open Settings, then Business, then Account details

The owner goes to Settings > Business > Account details at dashboard.stripe.com/account.

4
Click Close account

Scroll to the bottom of Account details and click Close account. Follow the prompts shown there. A closed account cannot be reopened.

A closed Stripe account cannot be reopened. Export reports first, and do not close if you still need to issue refunds or fight disputes.

Refunds, downgrades, pausing and your data

Four questions people ask before they cancel
Can I get my money back?

The Stripe Services Agreement says payment obligations are non-cancelable and Fees paid are non-refundable unless Stripe agrees otherwise in writing or law requires. The Subscription Pricing and Cancellation Policy adds that Subscription Service Fees are non-refundable and Stripe does not offer prorated refunds if you cancel before the end of the Subscription Plan term. Stripe's pricing FAQ states there is no closure fee on standard pricing.

No refunds
Is there a cheaper way to stay?

Cancelling a Billing, Radar or similar Subscription Plan takes effect at the end of the current term and, where available, moves that product to pay-as-you-go. Downgrades below the initial Subscription Plan during the term are not permitted for Billing and Radar. Closing the whole Stripe account is permanent and is not a downgrade.

Can I pause instead of cancel?

No account-level pause is documented. Optional product Subscription Plans can be scheduled to cancel at the end of the current term from Your plans, after which the account uses pay-as-you-go pricing when that option exists.

What happens to my account data?

Stripe recommends exporting data to CSV before closing. The Services Agreement says Stripe is not obligated to retain data received from or through the user after the Term, except as required by law, reasonably required for post-termination obligations, otherwise stated in the Agreement, or agreed in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Answers checked with the steps above
Does closing Stripe stop future processing fees?

Yes. After close you can no longer process payments. Standard Payments has no monthly platform fee, so unused-month refunds do not apply. Cancel Billing or Radar separately from Your plans if you also have those subscriptions.

Can I reopen a closed Stripe account?

No. Stripe's close-account article says once a Stripe account is closed, it cannot be reopened.

What if my account still has a balance?

Pay out a positive balance first. Stripe cannot close an account with a negative balance. Closing does not stop scheduled payouts that are already pending.

How do I cancel Stripe Billing or Radar without closing the account?

An account admin schedules cancellation from Dashboard settings under Your plans. It takes effect at the end of the current Subscription Plan term. Fees for that term stay payable and are not prorated.

Will Stripe refund unused subscription time?

No. Subscription Service Fees are non-refundable and Stripe does not offer prorated refunds if you cancel before the term ends.

Am I still responsible for refunds and disputes after close?

Yes. The owner stays responsible for refunds and disputes that arise after close, and the Dashboard can no longer be used to handle them.
