Namecheap can change Shared Hosting plans through Billing/Sales. Turning off Auto-Renew does not move hosting to a free plan.
Can I pause instead of cancel?
Letting hosting expire causes a temporary suspension before termination, but Namecheap does not document a user-selected paid subscription pause.
What happens to my account data?
