How do I cancel Gusto?
Cancel Gusto from Plan & billing: under Gusto billing, click Cancel account, choose tax-filing options, type the company name and confirm. It takes about 5 minutes and takes effect immediately. Service fees are generally non-refundable, and the final invoice covers the full month.

Step-by-step instructions
Gusto is month-to-month and bills one month in arrears.
Sign in at app.gusto.com as an admin who can cancel. If Payroll on AutoPilot is on, go to Pay > Settings, edit AutoPilot, turn it off and Save. You cannot cancel while a payroll is in progress.
In the bottom-left corner, click your company name, then open Plan & billing.
Under Gusto billing, click Cancel account. If you do not see it, you lack permission; ask the primary admin. Accountant-billed accounts must be canceled by that accountant or partner.
Select a cancel reason. If you are switching providers, Gusto refunds the tax balance and does not charge year-end filing fees. Otherwise choose Yes (Gusto files: $100 federal, $100 per state, $5 per W-2 or 1099) or No (Gusto refunds the tax balance and you file). Type the company name exactly, check the acknowledgement boxes and click Cancel account.
You cannot cancel while a payroll is in progress. There is no pause option; seasonal teams should keep the account active so Gusto continues to file.
If Gusto manages benefits, contact support with the help icon first. Workers' compensation through ERGO NEXT and any 401(k) provider need separate cancellation.

Refunds, downgrades, pausing and your data
Four questions people ask before they cancelEmployer Terms say Service Fees are non-refundable unless Gusto states otherwise, and fees apply for any full or partial month enrolled. Gusto bills retroactively, so the final invoice arrives the month after you cancel. Canceling after the fifth, or after running payroll that month, bills the full month. If you cancel on or before the fifth and do not run payroll that month, contact support via the help icon about a refund.
You can change plan once per month from Plan & billing > Change plan. Upgrades take effect immediately. Downgrades and removed add-ons take effect on the first of the next month, and that month still bills at the previous plan.
Gusto says there is no option to pause the subscription. Seasonal businesses should keep the account active so Gusto continues to file, or skip payrolls in the off season.
After cancel, admins can still view company forms, reports, employee information and past payrolls, and workers can still see paystubs and forms. Gusto usually cannot delete accounts that have bank transactions. Personal-data requests go through Gusto's Privacy Request Portal; Gusto keeps certain records for legal and tax reasons.
