# How to cancel GitHub Copilot

Cancel GitHub Copilot from your GitHub Settings under Billing & licensing, then Licensing: open Manage subscription and click Cancel subscription. It takes about a minute, and you keep your features until the billing cycle ends, then drop to Copilot Free. GitHub's Terms of Service make payments non-refundable, with no credits for partial months or unused time.

## Cancel in a web browser

> Use this if you pay GitHub directly for Copilot Pro, Pro+ or Max on your personal account.

1. **Open your GitHub settings** In the upper-right corner of any GitHub page, click your profile picture, then click Settings.
2. **Go to Billing & licensing, then Licensing** It sits in the "Access" section of the sidebar. On the older billing platform the path is Billing and licensing, then Plans and usage.
3. **Open Manage subscription, then Cancel subscription** In the "GitHub Copilot" section, open the Manage subscription dropdown and click Cancel subscription.
4. **Confirm the cancellation** Select Cancel Copilot Pro (or Pro+ / Max). You keep your features until the billing cycle ends, then drop to Copilot Free automatically.

## Cancel on iPhone / iPad

> Use this if you bought Copilot inside the GitHub Mobile app on iOS.

1. **Cancel through Apple, not GitHub** GitHub's docs confirm Copilot can be bought as an iOS in-app purchase and say to cancel the mobile subscription - Apple bills those, so only Apple can stop them.
2. **Open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions** This lists everything billed through your Apple account.
3. **Tap the GitHub Copilot subscription, then Cancel Subscription** If there is no Cancel button, or an expiration date shows in red text, the subscription is already cancelled.

## Cancel on Android

> Use this if you bought Copilot inside the GitHub Mobile app on Android.

1. **Open your subscriptions on Google Play** Uninstalling the GitHub app does not cancel the subscription.
2. **Select the GitHub Copilot subscription** Pick it from the list of active subscriptions.
3. **Tap Cancel subscription** Follow the instructions. You keep access for the time you have already paid.

## Cancel a team plan

> Copilot Business is cancelled at the organization level by disabling Copilot; individual members cannot do this.

1. **Open your organization's settings** Click your profile picture, then Organizations, pick the organization and click Settings.
2. **Go to Billing & licensing, then Licensing** GitHub notes all Copilot policies must be configured before you can complete these steps.
3. **Set Copilot to Disabled and confirm** Under "Copilot Business is active in your organization", select Disabled, then click Confirm and remove seats. This removes all assigned seats and cancels the organization's plan.

## Refunds, pausing, downgrades and your data

- **Refunds:** GitHub's Terms of Service make payments non-refundable: no refunds or credits for partial months, downgrades or unused time. One documented exception: if an organization assigns you a Copilot Business or Enterprise seat, your personal Copilot plan is cancelled automatically and the remaining part of the billing cycle is refunded pro rata.
- **Pausing:** No pause option is documented. GitHub's plan-management docs describe only cancelling or changing plans.
- **Downgrading:** After cancelling you are downgraded to Copilot Free at the end of the billing cycle. Copilot Free gives limited access to a selection of features and models (auto model selection only); the pricing page lists 2,000 completions per month.
- **Account data:** Cancelling Copilot only removes the paid plan - your GitHub account, repositories and settings are untouched. Deleting the GitHub account itself is a separate action: GitHub's Terms of Service say your profile and repository content are deleted within 90 days, except content you contributed to other users' repositories or that others forked.

## FAQ

**Do I keep access to Copilot after cancelling?**

Yes. You keep your current features until the end of your billing cycle, then you are automatically downgraded to Copilot Free.

**Can I get a refund for unused time?**

No. GitHub's Terms of Service exclude refunds for partial months, downgrades or unused time. The one documented exception is being assigned a Copilot Business or Enterprise seat, which auto-cancels your personal plan with a prorated refund.

**Why can't I find a cancel option?**

If you have free Copilot access as a verified student, teacher or maintainer of a popular open-source project, there is nothing to cancel. If access comes through an organization, only that organization can remove it.

**I subscribed through the GitHub Mobile app. What now?**

Copilot Pro, Pro+ and Max can be bought as in-app purchases on iOS and Android. GitHub's docs say to cancel the mobile subscription with Apple or Google - GitHub cannot do it for you - and re-subscribe on github.com if you want the web-billing extras.

**How does an organization cancel Copilot Business?**

In the organization's settings under Billing & licensing → Licensing, set Copilot to Disabled and click Confirm and remove seats. That removes all seats and cancels the plan.
